重而面々江御用可被仰付由也扨鯨船作之小早舟
にては大筒うたれ間敷とて筒役之内無心元思急には
御請難申と内々に而は申輩も有之故同十九日ニ須
崎ニ而御用丸見分あり此船に乗大銃打候事何程ニ
可有哉と云シ輩も有之され共二月十五日之夜之打

今度為上使渡部外記殿三領間ニ御差下し御下

つれも随分相励相勤可申旨御意被成候其旨
相心得来ル廿八日ニ若松表へ罷越情ヲ出シ相
務可申と被仰渡は華昨殿初諸役人被差立候

相勤めることができると存じ上げる旨、お受けを申し上げる。さて抱え大筒を撃つ人材を三人の方より書き出すようにとのことなので、即日御館にて抱え大筒を撃つ武士を書き出した。林文右衛門・同五太夫・若松甚太夫・同治平・臼杵弥右衛門・有田幸太夫・来島左平太・四宮助太夫・平野宅助・村上藤九郎、以上十人を書き付けて御老中がご覧になり、重ねて面々へ御用を申し付けられる由である。さて鯨船作りの小早舟では大筒は撃てないだろうということで、筒役の内には心もとなく思い、急にはお受けし難いと内々では申す者もいたため、同十九日に須崎にて御用丸の見分があった。この船に乗って大銃を撃つことはどの程度のものかと言う者もいたが、二月十五日の夜の打

一同正月二十一日、筒役の武士十人、林文右衛門・同五太夫・若松甚太夫・同治平・臼杵弥右衛門・有田幸太夫・来島左平太・四宮助太夫・平野宅助・村上藤九郎が御館へ召し出され、御月番の郡平馬殿各々申し、御列座にて申し渡されたのは、昨年以来唐船漂流につき、今度上使として渡部外記殿を三領間にお差し下しになり、御下知をなされ打払いを申し付けられた。ことに三領四領出合いの儀につき、いずれも十分に励み相勤めるべき旨御意をなされた。その旨心得て、来る二十八日に若松表へ出向き、情を出して相務めるべきと申し渡され、華昨殿をはじめ諸役人が差し立てられた。

Now, regarding the matter of selecting personnel to operate the portable cannon from the three domains, on the same day at the mansion, warriors capable of firing portable cannon were listed: Hayashi Bunemon, Hayashi Gotayū, Wakamatsu Jintayū, Wakamatsu Jihei, Usuki Yaemon, Arita Kōtayū, Kijima Sahei, Shinomiya Suketayū, Hirano Takusuke, and Murakami Tōkurō—ten men in total. This list was reviewed by the senior councilors, and these men would be given official duties again. However, some among the cannon operators felt uncertain about firing large cannon from small fast boats built like whaling vessels, and some privately expressed that they could not readily accept such orders. Therefore, on the 19th of the same month, there was an inspection of the official vessel at Susaki. Some questioned how feasible it would be to fire large guns from this ship, but beginning with the night attack on the 15th of February

and continuing thereafter, even those who did not actually fire from ships generally served adequately in their duties.
All together on the 21st day of the first month, the ten cannon operators—Hayashi Bunemon, Hayashi Gotayū, Wakamatsu Jintayū, Wakamatsu Jihei, Usuki Yaemon, Arita Kōtayū, Kijima Sahei, Shinomiya Suketayū, Hirano Takusuke, and Murakami Tōkurō—were summoned to the mansion. In the presence of the monthly duty officer Lord Gun Heima and others, the following was announced: Due to Chinese ships drifting since last year, Inspector Watanabe Geki has now been dispatched as an envoy to the three domains, and orders have been given to carry out expulsions according to his directives. Particularly regarding the cooperation between three or four domains, His Lordship expressed his intention that everyone should work diligently in their duties. With this understanding, they were ordered to proceed to Wakamatsu on the coming 28th day to demonstrate their commitment and carry out their duties. Lord Kasaku and various other officials were appointed to lead this effort.
