茶湯百首
其道にいらむとおもふ心こそ
我身なからの師道なりけれ
習ひつゝ見てこそは知れ習はすに
よしあしいふはおろか成けり
心さし深き人にはちゝたひも【千々度】
あわれみふかく能くおしゆへし
我をすて人に物とひ習ふこそ
のちは上手のもとひ成けれ
手前をはよはみをわすれたゝつよく
我と風俗賤しくなしそ
手前をは強み計とおもふなよ
つよきはよはくかろく重かれ
手前とは薄茶に有と聞ものを
濃茶におもふ人はあやまり
濃茶には手前をすてゝ一すしに
服のかけんといきをちらすな
濃茶にはゆかけんあつく服はなを
淡なきやうにかたまりもなく

茶湯百首
その道に入ろうと思う心こそ
我が身ながらの師匠なのである
習いつつ見てこそ知ることができる。習わずに
良し悪しを言うのは愚かなことである
志の深い人には千度でも
哀れみ深く良く教えるべきである
我を捨てて人に物事を問い習うことこそ
後には上手になる基となるのである
手前は弱みを忘れただ強く
我流で作法を卑しくしてはならない
手前は強みばかりと思ってはいけない
強きは弱く軽く重くあれ
手前とは薄茶にあると聞くものを
濃茶にあると思う人は間違いである
濃茶には手前を捨てて一筋に
服の加減にと息を散らすな
濃茶には湯加減熱く服はなお
淡くなきよう塊もなく

The heart that wishes to enter that path
Is itself the teacher within one's own being
Only by learning and observing can one truly know.
To speak of good and bad without learning is foolish
To those with deep aspiration, even a thousand times
One should teach with deep compassion and skill
Abandoning the self and asking others to learn
This becomes the foundation for later mastery
In tea procedure, do not forget weakness and be merely strong
Do not make the manners vulgar through self-styled ways
Do not think that tea procedure consists only of strength
Let the strong be weak, the light be heavy
I hear that tea procedure exists in thin tea,
Those who think it exists in thick tea are mistaken
In thick tea, abandon technique and with single focus
Do not scatter your breath worrying about the serving
In thick tea, let the hot water be hot, and the serving still
Without being thin, without lumps
