一豆腐屋肴屋初市中其外物売之商人
廻るを谷売と言ひ酒醤油其外用聞に歩行
を谷廻りといひ帳簿を谷帳といへるは
朝倉家一乗谷にて全盛成し頃谷々の
屋敷を初夫々廻りし頃の古語

釘をもて打つけ置なり其焼印の小板
紛失又はわすれたりしたる時は其仕損したる
ものゝ過ちとして其者より路十七軒の焼

市中谷売りの古事
一 豆腐屋、肴屋をはじめ市中その外物売りの商人が廻ることを谷売りと言い、酒醤油その外の用聞きに歩くことを谷廻りと言い、帳簿を谷帳と言うのは、朝倉家が一乗谷にて全盛を成した頃、谷々の屋敷をはじめそれぞれ廻った頃の古語が残ったものである。

Ancient Matters of Tani-uri (Valley Selling) in the Town
1. Tofu sellers, fish sellers, and other merchants who go around the town selling goods are called "tani-uri" (valley sellers). Those who walk around for sake, soy sauce, and other service calls are called "tani-mawari" (valley rounds), and their account books are called "tani-chō" (valley ledgers). These terms are ancient words that remain from the time when the Asakura family was at the height of their prosperity at Ichijō-dani, when merchants went around the various valley residences.

Kimochika says there is one story about this tani-uri.
Around the time when our founding lord Hideyasu entered the domain, there were only eighteen tofu merchant houses in Fukui town, and when sending out sellers, no more than one person per establishment could be sent out - this was the rule among the eighteen establishments. Therefore, on top of the tofu seller's box, the characters "tani-aratame" (valley inspection) were branded with a hot iron onto a small wooden board and nailed in place. When this branded small board was lost or forgotten, it was considered the fault of the one who made the mistake, and that person had to replace all the branded small boards of the other seventeen establishments.
