より数多ありて言伝へしが又右怪説を考て
滑稽の徒らとなせしものあり
いつの事か冬中寒夜の頃蕎麦売
の通りしを蓑笠着たる侍体之もの一膳
くれと呼留られよき御客よと大歓愛相
たら〳〵熱ふして盛替〳〵したゝか喰ひしが
うつむきしよと見る間に天狗の面をかむり
親父（おやぢ）うまい事じやと仰向しかば
誰かはもつて驚かさらん銭は元より荷物迄
不残其侭命限りと逃去りける故又も気
楽に手盛八盃腹満る迄喰ひたるものあり

一旧御泉水町北片側は泉邸種々之樹木
繁茂塀を越えて官道へ枝の出るもあり
南の側は浄水に添ひ長屋を連らねし屋敷
屋敷之内東の端なる相馬てふ屋敷に古き
杉の大樹あり夜中には種々之妖怪有て却か
されしもの度々有し故衆人此辺へ夜行を
恐れしが ある時さる臆病もの余義なき
現代語訳
より数多くあって言い伝えられてきたが、またこの怪談を考えて滑稽な悪戯とした者がある。
いつの事か冬の寒い夜の頃、蕎麦売りが通りかかったところを、蓑笠を着た侍の姿をした者が一膳くれと呼び止めた。良いお客だと大変喜んで、熱々に煮て何杯もおかわりをして、たいそう食べたが、うつむいたかと思う間に天狗の面をかぶり、「親父、うまいことだ」と仰向けになったので、誰であろうと驚かずにはいられない。銭は元より荷物まで全て残したまま、命からがら逃げ去ったので、また気楽に手盛りで八杯も腹いっぱいになるまで食べた者があったということである。

At some time during the cold nights of winter, when a soba noodle vendor was passing by, a figure dressed as a samurai wearing a straw raincoat and hat called out asking for a bowl. Greatly pleased to have such a good customer, the vendor enthusiastically served hot noodles with multiple refills, and the customer ate heartily. But just as he appeared to bow his head down, in an instant he put on a tengu mask and looked up saying, "Old man, this was delicious!" Anyone would be startled by this.
