飛付しも本意を遂さる故にや何方へか隠れしに
良【やや】暫して数多の鼠群り出何か梁上へチウ〳〵
チウ〳〵とやかましく引出るを能々見定めしに
馬の沓に劫歴て毛も斑らにはげたるを乗
せしなり程能き座に着一応見分之体にて
傍の若鼠に何か指図の様子にてチウ〳〵と言ひしに
右鼠直様馳行しが間もなく水に浸りしやぬれ
鼠と成て沓の前に畏りしが又チウ〳〵と言ふかと
見る間に右袋に飛付とひとしくどつと敗れ
て残りなくこぼれ落けれは老鼠は元のことく
引行けり其家之主右老錬之工夫を感し
一粒もとらで与（巣屋へ）へしと也
是はいらさる話なれと微少なる畜類すら如此
況や万物の長たる人間に於ける銘々徳疾
智鈍の生質はあるも其営業の道々により
得失利害の古き話は必有ものなれは
深切に労く有益の事は可聞置事なり
現代語訳
飛び付いても本意を遂げられない故であろうか、どこかへ隠れてしまった。
しばらくして多数の鼠が群がり出て、何かを梁の上へチューチュー
チューチューとやかましく引き出すのをよくよく見定めると、
馬の沓に年老いて毛もまだらに禿げたものを乗
せているのであった。程よい座に着き、一通り見分する様子で
傍の若い鼠に何か指図する様子でチューチューと言うと、
その鼠はすぐさま駆けて行ったが、間もなく水に浸かって濡れ
鼠となって沓の前にかしこまった。また老鼠がチューチューと言うかと
見る間に、その袋に飛び付くと同時にドッと破れて
残らずこぼれ落ちたので、老鼠は元の通り
引き上げて行った。その家の主人は、この老鼠の工夫に感心し、
一粒も取らずに与えた（巣穴へ）ということである。
これは取るに足らない話ではあるが、微少な畜類でさえこのようであるのだから、
ましてや万物の長たる人間においては、銘々に徳の浅深、
知恵の鈍さはあっても、その営業の道々により
得失利害の古い話は必ずあるものであるから、
親切に労って有益なことは聞いておくべきことである。
英語訳
Unable to achieve its purpose despite jumping repeatedly, the rat eventually hid somewhere.
After a while, many rats emerged in a group and noisily pulled something up to the beams with
squeaking sounds. Upon careful observation, it was found that they had placed
an aged rat with patchy, balding fur upon a horse's hoof.
Settling into a proper position and surveying the situation,
the old rat squeaked instructions to a young rat nearby.
The young rat immediately ran off and soon returned soaked with water,
appearing as a drowned rat, and crouched respectfully before the hoof. When the old rat squeaked again,
in an instant the young rat leaped at the bag, causing it to burst open
and spill out completely. The old rat then withdrew
as before. The master of the house, impressed by this old rat's ingenuity,
gave them the spilled contents without taking a single grain (to their nest).
Though this may seem like a trivial tale, if even such small creatures can devise such schemes,
how much more so must humans, being the masters of all creation, each possess
varying degrees of virtue and wisdom according to their nature, and through their various trades and occupations
surely have old stories of gains and losses, benefits and harms.
Therefore, one should make the effort to listen carefully to beneficial matters.
