おかしく如何するやと見て居しに大風呂敷
を出してもじ〳〵迷惑之体をなして言ふ様
何卒米俵二ッ三ッ縄を少し被下と申ゆへ
いかにも不便に思ひ取出して与へしかば其
中へ格好よく包みてありがたふ御座り升と
三文を出して礼を演べ肩にかけて立去りし
跡にて家内のものに言ふ様 武士之固めし
我等の一言に恐れ無是非買行し不便
さよと誇り顔にて笑へる折近所の子
供来て言ふ様先程爰にて買行し
破れ瓶如何するやと附ヶ廻せしに向ふの
折曲り溝の中へ打捨縄俵計り取て
足早に何方へか行たりと告るを聞て
大に驚遺憾に思ふも詮方なく歯噛して
後悔せしとそ
性は道によつてかしこしとの古語宜成かな
現代語訳
おかしく「どうするのか」と見ていると、大風呂敷
を出して、もじもじと迷惑そうな様子をして言うには、
「何とぞ米俵を二つ三つ、縄を少し下さい」と申すので、
いかにも気の毒に思って取り出して与えたところ、その
中へ格好よく包んで「ありがとうございます」と
三文を出して礼を述べ、肩にかけて立ち去った。
その後で家内の者に言うには「武士の言い張った
我らの一言を恐れ、無理やり買っていった。気の毒な
ことよ」と誇らしげに笑っていた折、近所の子
供が来て言うには「先ほどここで買っていった
破れた瓶をどうするのかと後をつけて回ったところ、向こうの
角を曲がったところの溝の中へ打ち捨て、縄と俵だけ取って
足早にどこかへ行きました」と告げるのを聞いて、
大いに驚き残念に思ったが仕方なく、歯噛みして
後悔したということである。
「性は道によって賢し」との古語はもっともなことかな。
英語訳
low, wondering "What will he do?" when the merchant took out a large furoshiki wrapping cloth and, looking troubled and embarrassed, said "Please, could you give me two or three rice straw sacks and some rope?" The samurai felt sorry for him and brought these out. The merchant skillfully wrapped the broken jar in them, said "Thank you very much," put down the three mon, bowed politely, shouldered his bundle and left.
Afterward, the samurai said to his household: "The merchant was so afraid of us samurai and our firm words that he was forced to buy it anyway. How pitiful for him!" He was laughing proudly when a neighborhood child came and said: "I followed that man who bought the broken jar earlier to see what he would do with it. At the corner over there, he threw it into the ditch, took only the rope and straw sacks, and quickly went off somewhere."
Upon hearing this, the samurai was greatly shocked and chagrined, but there was nothing to be done. He could only grit his teeth in regret.
The old saying "One becomes wise through one's trade" is indeed apt!
