谷家ノ者ドモ無人嶋ヘ渡リシハ潤【閏】四月初旬ニ下田ヲ出帆
シテ同年ノ六月下旬同所ヘ皈帆スルトキハ此瀬ノ穏カナ
ル時節故。此瀬ノ難所ヲ不見シテ乗過シト思ハル此故ニ
不記歟◯私按ニ彼ノ嶋八十余嶋ノ中。第一ノ大嶋。廻リ十
五里ナルトキハ壱岐嶋ニ比スヘシ其次ノ大嶋廻リ十里ナ

ブモノ八嶋有。都テ此十嶋ハ湊アリ平地アリ人居住スベ

現代語訳
の黒潮である。この瀬を乗り切ることは大いに心得が必要であることを聞いている。しかしながら夏秋はこの瀬の流れが穏やかであり、冬春は大急流であるという。島谷家の者どもが無人島へ渡ったのは閏四月初旬に下田を出帆して同年の六月下旬に同所へ帰帆するときであり、この瀬の穏やかな時節であった。このため、この瀬の難所を見ることなく通り過ぎたと思われる。この故に記録しなかったのであろうか。○私見によれば、かの島八十余島の中で、第一の大島で周囲十五里であるとすれば壱岐島に匹敵するであろう。その次の大島で周囲十里であるとすれば天草島に匹敵するであろう。その他、周囲二里以上六、七里に及ぶものが八島ある。合計でこの十島は港があり平地があり、人が居住でき五穀を植えることができる。また暖かい気候の辺境地であるため、珍しい異物を産するのである。

is the Kuroshio (Black Current). I have heard that navigating through this current requires great skill and knowledge. However, in summer and autumn this current flows gently, while in winter and spring it becomes a great rapid current. The members of the Shimatani family crossed to the uninhabited islands departing from Shimoda in early intercalary fourth month and returning to the same place in late sixth month of the same year, which was during the calm season for this current. Therefore, it seems they passed through without witnessing the treacherous nature of this current. This may be why they did not record it. ○In my opinion, among those eighty-odd islands, if the largest island has a circumference of fifteen ri, it would be comparable to Iki Island. If the second largest island has a circumference of ten ri, it would be comparable to Amakusa Island. Additionally, there are eight islands ranging from two ri to six or seven ri in circumference. In total, these ten islands have harbors and flat land where people could reside and cultivate the five grains. Moreover, being in a warm climate region, they produce rare and exotic items.
