サシムル也且此交易ノトキ其産物少計ヲ松前ノ公室ヘ納メシム

させるのである。また、この交易の時、その産物の少しずつを松前の公室へ納めさせるのである。これを「サシ荷」といって、つまり年貢の意味であるという。
右のように村々に運上屋があって指導を行うといっても、その運上屋にいる者たちはすべて俗商であるため、蝦夷人に接する際に時々見苦しいことがあると聞いている。願わくは、このようなことを禁じて、礼意と徳意をもって相接し、蝦夷人をして心服させるべきことを、俗商の上にも心得てもらいたいことである。
東の部には御味方蝦夷というものがいる。これは家中同然で、毎年松前へ年始の礼に出仕するのである。その始終は甚だ慎ましやかであるという。
その国には文字がなく、財貨がなく、穀物や織物もない。熟銅や鉄もない。ただ海産物を取り、また鳥獣を狩って食とし、生を遂げるまでのことである。

They facilitate this trade. Moreover, during these trading activities, a small portion of the products is made to be delivered to the official residence of Matsumae. This is called "sashi-ni" (tribute goods), which essentially has the meaning of annual tribute.
Although trading posts exist in villages as described above to provide guidance, since all those stationed at these trading posts are common merchants, I have heard that there are sometimes unseemly behaviors when dealing with the Ezo people. It is hoped that such conduct be prohibited, and that they interact with courtesy and virtue to make the Ezo people submit willingly - this is something that even the common merchants should understand.
In the Eastern part, there are those called "Gomikata Ezo" (Allied Ezo). These are treated the same as retainers, and every year they serve at Matsumae for New Year's ceremonies. Their conduct throughout is said to be extremely respectful.
That country has no writing system, no wealth or currency, no grains or textiles, and no refined copper or iron. They simply catch marine products and hunt birds and beasts for food, living only to sustain their lives.
