を異にする者がある。親は日本の服を着て、子はアツシを着用し、妻は中国の服で、娘はロシア人のような格好をする者があるという。さもありそうなことと思われる。実に秩序のない蛮族である。
その国土を一言で言えば、百里に三百里ほどの一つの大きな石山である。そのため地面はことごとく険しく、内陸部には農業を営むべき耕地がない。この理由で、ただ海岸に沿ってわずかに百七ヶ村があるのみである。《松前七十里の村と山住の蝦夷人の村はこの外である》
東北の方に山住の蝦夷人がある。これを蝦夷語でメナシという。海産物に乏しいため、大豆・麦・粟・稗などを植えるというが、寒冷で痩せた田畑であるため、実りは極めて少なく、ただ耕作する者の腹を満たすのみで、他に分け与える
