城趾ヨリ熊石マデ小道一千三百二十里。今道二百二十里
也。是今ノ蝦夷国界ニシテ日本風土ノ限リトスル也《割書：是ヲ｜以テ》
《割書：考レバ天平宝字ノ頃ヨリ蝦夷国｜界ノ広クナリシコト九陪余ナリ》此如ク奥ノ地。次第ニ開
ケシ故ニ古ト今ト蝦夷国界ノ遠近。大ニ差アル也。今人其

多賀城跡より熊石まで小道一千三百二十里、今の道法で二百二十里である。これが今の蝦夷国境であって日本領土の境界とするものである《割注：これを以て考えれば天平宝字の頃より蝦夷国界の広くなったこと九倍余りである》。このように奥地が次第に開拓されたため、古代と現代とで蝦夷国境の遠近に大きな違いがある。今の人はその事情を知らない。このため今、坪碑を読む者は、その文言によって蝦夷国境は大変近いと言って迷いを抱く人が多い。よってここに記して、今の蝦夷国界は古の蝦夷国界ではないことを明らかにする。
