夷国ノ大躰ヲ可見モノ。此三書ヲ外ニシテ更ニ書ナシ此故ニ今小子
ガ述ル所モ此三書ニ本ツイテ且コレニ加ルニ。ヘイトガ言ヲ以テシ
亦其国渡海ノ舟人ノ説ヲ撰采テ彼是相照シテ浄写スル故。

蝦夷国の大体を知ることができるものは、この三書以外にはもはや書物がない。この故に今、小子（私）が述べる所も、この三書に基づいて、かつこれに加えるにロシア人の言葉を以てし、またその国への渡海の船人の説を選び採って、あれこれを相互に照らし合わせて浄写する故、新説が既に多い。その旧説は三書に多く載っている故、ここには書かない。
朝鮮、琉球の人物は代々我が国に来聘して諸人の見る所であるから、その図を載せない。蝦夷人に至っては、奥羽の人と言っても見たことがない。況んやその他をや。仍ってその人物および衣服器物等の大略を図するのみである。
その国の方言は、聞き伝えたことが数多くあるけれども、文が長くなるので記さない。ただその一より十までの数の名の方言を左に挙げるのみである。

For understanding the general situation of Ezo country, there are no other books besides these three works. Therefore, what I, this humble scholar, describe now is also based on these three books, and in addition to this, I have added Russian accounts and selected and collected explanations from sailors who have crossed the seas to that country, comparing and contrasting various sources to produce a clean copy. Hence, there are already many new theories. Since the old theories are extensively recorded in the three books, I do not write them here.
Regarding people from Korea and Ryukyu, they have come as envoys to our country for generations and are seen by many people, so I do not include their illustrations. As for the Ezo people, even people from Ou (northern Honshu) have never seen them, let alone others. Therefore, I only illustrate the general appearance of their people, clothing, implements, and such.
Regarding the dialect of that country, I have heard and learned many things, but since the text would become lengthy, I do not record them. I only list below the dialect names for numbers from one to ten.
