（前頁より続き）…やすべた（粗末な）の馬に打ち乗って、一度にぱっと萌え出す。四陣には焼原灰人（やけはら・はいと）、成益穴蔵落とし（なります・あなぐらおとし）の鎧に、輝く火の粉の星兜（ほしかぶと）、鞍の目塗りの小手・脛当て、散財駒（さんざいごま）にまたがって、ひらりひらりと打ち出る。後陣はしんがり、尻火（しりび）の押さえ、矢鱈飛火頭広焼（やたらとびひのかみ・ひろやき）、人おどしの鎧に、鍬形の灰かき打ったる焼き鍋の兜を着し、焼草色（やけくさいろ）の陣羽織に、焚きつけ雑木の指物をして、見物栗毛の弥次馬に打ちまたがり、郎党・火の子を前後に従え、ばらばらぱっと萌え出し、縦横無尽に押し移り、風にまかせて焼き立てたり。

In the fourth column rode Yakehara Haito (Burned-Field Ash-Man), clad in armor bearing the crest of "profitable cellar-drop," wearing a star-helmet glittering with sparks, saddle-lacquered gauntlets and shin-guards, astride his "squandered-coin steed," prancing lightly into the fray. Bringing up the rear was the rearguard, the "trailing fire" suppressor, the recklessly scattering flying-ember commander Hiroyaki (Wide Burner), wearing "people-frightening" armor, a burnt-pot helmet adorned with an ash-raking hoe-crest, a charred-grass-colored battle surcoat, with kindling-wood insignia on his back, astride a spectator's chestnut-colored "rubbernecker horse," his retainers and fire-sparks following before and behind; they burst forth in scattered flashes, advancing in every direction without limit, burning freely as the wind allowed.
○ Now, the watchmen guarding against emergencies, ever-vigilant against this night's wind, had posted lookouts in the fire-watch tower. No sooner did they spot the fire breaking out than they suddenly sounded the alarm-bell, the battle drum, and the warning clappers. The residents of the various households—unprepared, like water poured into a sleeping ear—found themselves with no strength to resist such a sudden nocturnal fire attack.
