現代語訳
猿と大蛇、いろいろと流行りそうな開帳の仏を考えてみたけれども、とにかく霧島の化け地蔵が良かろうと相談が決まり、猫を院へも行っていろいろと勧めた。三毛和尚も金儲けの筋なので、さっそく得心して、「早く鎌倉へ行って頼んでくれよ」と言われたので、
向かいに出て、だんだんと行き、六郷の渡しへ行ったところ、山々の雪が解けて水勢が早く、渡るべきようもない。蛇は泳いで行こうと言うけれども、猿は水は根から知らず、どうしようかと案じていたところへ、この川の主のすっぽんが出てきて「渡してやろう」と言う。二人は大いに喜んで、すっぽんに乗って渡った。
♪すっぽんと落ちたら猿食ってなるまい
♪ご案じなさることはない、帰りにも渡してあげよう

「これは良いところでお前にお目にかかり、お陰で渡りました。しかし、どうも蛇が悪くてならぬ。」
英語訳
The monkey and the great snake considered various Buddhist statues that might be popular for temple exhibitions, but they finally agreed that the monster Jizo of Kirishima would be best. They went to the cat temple and made various recommendations. Since the Three-Colored Monk also saw profit in this venture, he immediately agreed and said, "Go quickly to Kamakura and make the request."
Setting out toward their destination, they traveled gradually until they reached the Rokugō ferry crossing. The snow from the mountains had melted, making the water flow swift, with no way to cross. The snake said he could swim across, but the monkey knew nothing about water from the start and was wondering what to do, when the master of this river, a soft-shell turtle, appeared and said, "I'll ferry you across." The two were overjoyed and rode on the turtle to cross.
♪If you fall off the turtle, the monkey won't get eaten
♪Don't worry about it, I'll ferry you back on the return trip too
