やっと僧都のもとにお着きになった。僧都は御覧になって驚き、哀れにお思いになり、二三日は労わり申し上げて、様々にありがたいお話などをなさった。その後、北の方が髪を下ろしたい旨をお聞かせになると、僧都も力なく、一方では又済度のためでもあるので、仏の御前に向かって「流転三界中、恩愛不能断、棄恩入無為、真実報恩者」という文を授けなさって、お二人とも髪をお下ろしになって、哀れであった。

Finally, they arrived at the sōzu's (high-ranking monk's) residence. When the sōzu saw them, he was startled and felt great compassion. For two or three days, he cared for them tenderly and shared various profound Buddhist teachings. Afterward, when the Kita no Kata expressed her desire to take the tonsure, the sōzu, though reluctant, recognized that it was also for the sake of salvation. Before the Buddha, he recited the verse "Wandering through the three realms, unable to sever bonds of love and attachment, abandoning worldly ties to enter the unconditioned, this is the true way to repay one's debts of gratitude," and both women had their hair cut in the Buddhist ceremony. It was a deeply moving scene.
