院に参り、日頃頼みにしていた僧都に会って事の次第を語り、髪を剃って名を真海と改め、五戒を受けて行った。それから二年経って、僧都にお暇を申し受けて、諸国修行の旅に出たのであった。

He went to the temple and met with the sōzu (high-ranking monk) whom he had long relied upon, told him about what had happened, had his head shaved, changed his name to Shinkai, and received the Five Precepts. After two years had passed, he requested leave from the sōzu and set out on a pilgrimage of ascetic practice throughout the provinces.
