さすか御はうのなこりもおしけれは坊の
はしらに一しゆのうたをそかきつけける
いつの世にこの身を人のなそらへて
もとめてやらんにこり江【濁り江＝水の濁っている入江】の月
かやうにゑ【「え」とあるところ。】いし【詠じ】て山をたち出たつときみね
〳〵をめくりけるかあるときはくさのまくら
に露をかたしきあるときはいはのはさま
にこけのころもをむしろとしてかせをふせ
きよもすから【夜もすがら＝夜どおし】ほとけの御名をとなへわかき
みもろともにひとつはちすのうてな【一つ蓮の台＝注】に
【注 「はちす」＝蓮の古名。「蓮の台(うてな)＝極楽往生した者の座るという蓮の花の形をした台。 「一つ蓮の台＝死後は一緒に極楽に生まれかわり同じ蓮華のうてな(台)にすわるという意】

も仏のみなをわするゝことなしあるとき
ならのみやこの大ふつてんにまいりて仏の
御まへにつや【通夜】してよもすから御きやうを
たつてよみてあかつきかたになれは自他
ひやうとう緒所異とゑかうし給ひけるこ
そしゆせうなれかくてたうすの御坊あか
つきのつとめに出給ふかこのしんかいのあり
さまをみていとあはれさよとおほしけれは
ちかくよりそひ御身はいつちよりいかなる人
現代語訳

さすがに御房（寺）の名残も惜しかったので、坊の柱に一首の歌を書き付けた。
いつの世にこの身を人になぞらえて
求めてやらん濁り江の月
このように詠んで山を立ち去り、峰々を巡っていた。あるときは草を枕にして露を敷物とし、あるときは岩の間で苔の衣を敷物として風を防ぎ、夜通し仏の御名を唱えて「私の若い身も共に一つ蓮の台に迎えてください」と回向し続けた。

そうして天拝にも仏の御名を忘れることがなかった。あるとき奈良の都の大仏殿に参って、仏の御前で通夜をし、夜通し御経を声高に読んで、暁方になると「自他平等、諸所異」と回向されたのが殊勝であった。こうして当寺の御坊が暁の勤めに出られると、この真海の有様を見て、とても哀れに思われたので、近くに寄り添って「御身はどちらから来られた、どのような人で

Even so, he felt reluctant to leave the temple, so he wrote a poem on a pillar of the temple building:
In what lifetime shall I compare this body to others
And seek the moon over the muddy inlet?
Having composed this poem, he departed from the mountain and wandered among the peaks. Sometimes he used grass as a pillow with dew as his bedding, and sometimes he sheltered from the wind between rocks, using moss robes as a mat. Throughout the night he chanted the Buddha's name, praying "Please welcome my young body as well to the same lotus pedestal" through continuous memorial prayers.

Thus even during prostrations he never forgot the Buddha's name. One time he visited the Great Buddha Hall in the capital of Nara, kept vigil before the Buddha, chanted sutras aloud throughout the night, and at dawn offered prayers saying "self and others are equal, all places are different" - which was most admirable. When the temple's head priest came out for morning prayers and saw Shinkai's condition, he felt great compassion and approached him, asking "Where do you come from? What kind of person are you?"
