現代語訳
コンクハイはしきりに大通人になりたがり、千住では少し憂鬱になるので、通町の京伝の店先で大通人を一袋買って帰り、身の若菜好きの芋売りの親父がまた隣に庵室を建て、玄関には浜通りの黒いとろろで作った看板に「するけふしコンクハイ」と看板を掲げ、鳥鳴かせなどの通俗講釈を始めたところ、近年は獣たちも通人になりたがって集まってくるようになったので、大いに繁盛し、油揚げや小豆飯の売り物もあって、門前市を成すほどであった。

Konkuhai earnestly desired to become a sophisticated urbanite, and finding Senju a bit depressing, he bought a bag of sophistication at Kyōden's shop on the main street and returned home. The sweet potato seller, who was fond of young greens, built a hermitage next door, and at the entrance hung a sign made of black tororo from the coastal district reading "Surukefushi Konkuhai," and began giving popular lectures on bird calls and such. In recent years, as beasts too began wanting to become sophisticated and gathered around, business greatly flourished, with fried tofu and azuki rice for sale, creating a bustling marketplace at the gate.
