隠居并休息被仰付事并再勤
一隠居之儀は父子共に被召呼御家老中被仰付知行取申而も御目付壱人指加且又隠居之御礼は御前へ罷出申上候
但当日御役替有之候内に御番組之内未之番外以上被仰付候節は其番頭御前へ罷出御
礼申上候間其跡に隠居被仰付候者罷出御礼申上之御家老中御取合有之
一未之番外以上隠居と被仰付御番組は休息与被仰付候乍去御番組に而隠居と被仰付候例

無之事に候へとも格別故右之通被仰付拝知百五十石無相違忰市左衛門へ被下置只今迄被下置候御ふち方次男和助へ被下置候

老中被申聞候は是迄隠居之面々着服之儀十徳羽織等に限候得共以来袴上下等勤
之通に致居候儀も勝手次第にいたし候様寄々申聞候／旨（様）被申聞候尤休息之面々は願申上
現代語訳
隠居並びに休息を仰せ付けられる事並びに再勤について
一、隠居の儀は父子ともにお呼び出しになり、御家老中が仰せ付けられる。知行取であっても御目付一人を指し加え、また隠居の御礼は御前へ出て申し上げる。
ただし当日御役替えがある内に、御番組の内で未之番外以上を仰せ付けられる節は、その番頭が御前へ出て御礼を申し上げるので、その後に隠居を仰せ付けられた者が出て御礼を申し上げ、御家老中がお取り合いになる。
一、未之番外以上で隠居と仰せ付けられる者は御番組では休息と仰せ付けられるが、御番組で隠居と仰せ付けられた例は左の通り。

一、松江善兵衛の儀 右善兵衛忠右衛門の儀は、隆芳院様の御代から年来御奉公を勤めたところ、年も寄ったので隠居を仰せ付けられるので、ゆっくりと休息をするように。これまで御番組の者で隠居を仰せ付けられることはなかったが、当人の儀は格別にお思し召しの家督なので、右の通り仰せ出されるので、御意の趣旨を申し渡すこと。
ただし御番組で隠居を仰せ付けられることはないことであるが、格別の故をもって右の通り仰せ付けられ、拝知百五十石を相違なく忰市左衛門へお下し置き、これまでお下し置きの御扶持方を次男和助へお下し置く。

一、石川忠右衛門 右同様に仰せ付けられ、拝知百二十五石を相違なく忰八左衛門へお下し置く。
一、奈良忠左衛門 金津奉行まで勤めたが不調法で大番組へ入れられたところ、年寄りにつき隠居を仰せ付けられる。
一、休息の儀は忰のみをお呼び出しになり仰せ付けられること。
一、隠居の面々が装束袴を着用していることは差し支えなく、年始御礼等にも麻上下を着用して差し支えない旨、文化年間に仰せ出された。
ただし休息の面々の服装の儀については何の仰せ出しもない。
一、文化五年辰閏六月、御先物頭大谷市右衛門、御普請奉行武田太郎右衛門が隠居を仰せ付けられた節、御家老中が申し聞かされたのは、これまで隠居の面々の着服の儀は十徳羽織等に限られていたが、以来袴上下等現役の通りにしていることも勝手次第にするように、寄々申し聞かす様子を申し聞かされた。もっとも休息の面々は願い申し上げ。

Regarding Retirement (inkyo) and Rest (kyūsoku) Appointments and Returning to Service
1. For retirement matters, both father and son are summoned, and the Senior Councilors make the appointment. Even for fief holders (chigyōtori), one inspector (metsuke) is assigned, and retirement ceremonies are performed in the lord's presence.
However, when there are role changes on the same day and appointments of Mi-no-bangai rank or higher within the guard units occur, the unit commander presents himself before the lord for the ceremony, after which those appointed to retirement present themselves for the ceremony, with the Senior Councilors facilitating.
1. Those of Mi-no-bangai rank or higher appointed to retirement are designated as "rest" within the guard units, but examples of those appointed to retirement while in guard units are as follows:
《Hōei 6, 11th month, 26th day, Great Guard Unit》
1. Matsue Zenbei: This Zenbei Chūemon served faithfully from the time of Lord Ryūhōin, but due to advanced age is appointed to retirement, so he should rest comfortably. Until now, no one from the guard units has been appointed to retirement, but this person's house succession is held in special regard, so this appointment is made as stated above, and this intent should be conveyed.
However, while retirement appointments for guard unit members are unprecedented, due to special circumstances this appointment is made as above, with his stipend of 150 koku granted without change to his son Ichizaemon, and the rice allowance previously granted to be given to his second son Wasuke.
《Same day, same unit》
1. Ishikawa Chūemon: Similarly appointed, with his stipend of 125 koku granted without change to his son Hachizaemon.
1. Nara Chūzaemon: Served up to Kanazu magistrate but due to misconduct was placed in the Great Guard unit, and due to old age is appointed to retirement.
1. For rest appointments, only the son is summoned and appointed.
1. It was announced during the Bunka era that retired persons may wear formal dress with hakama, and may also wear hemp kamishimo for New Year ceremonies and similar occasions without problem.
However, there are no announcements regarding the clothing of those on rest status.
1. In Bunka 5, intercalary 6th month, when Senior Spear Commander Ōtani Ichiemon and Construction Magistrate Takeda Tarōemon were appointed to retirement, the Senior Councilors announced that while previously retired persons' clothing was limited to juttoku haori and similar garments, henceforth wearing hakama kamishimo like active retainers would be at their discretion, and this was conveyed variously. However, those on rest status must submit requests.
