現代語訳

ある時お六とお雪が連れ立って、あまりにも双六を打ち続けていたところ、二人ともにとろとろと眠りに入った。いつもは互いに顔を合わせては仲良く美しくしているけれども、内心には嫉妬が強く、二人の物の怪の髪の毛が逆立ち争う様は、化け物の目にも恐ろしいものであった。

神輿の介がこの様子を見て、初めて心づいた。「さても女は内心、嫉妬深いものだということを、今初めて悟った。我ながら迷うことよ」

これより仏道に入り、二つには行方不明になった息子も探したいと、自ら自分の黒髪を切り払い、二人への形見として残しておき、発心して家を出て諸国行脚の旅に心を向けた。

これより神輿入道となり、浮世を悟り、諸所にて「もしや我が子か」と思えば、後ろから首を伸ばして人を見越したため、あそこでもここでも「見越し入道が出る」と恐れられるようになった。

英語訳

One time, Oroku and Oyuki were together, playing sugoroku (a board game) for so long that both of them drowsily fell asleep. Though they usually appeared friendly and beautiful when facing each other, deep in their hearts they harbored strong jealousy, and the sight of the two supernatural beings' hair standing on end in conflict was frightening even to the eyes of monsters.

Mikoshi no Suke, witnessing this scene, realized for the first time: "So women are indeed jealous deep in their hearts - I understand this for the first time now. How foolish of me to be so confused."

From this point, he entered the Buddhist path, and secondly, wanting to search for his missing son, he cut off his own black hair, left it as a keepsake for the two women, took religious vows and left home, setting his heart on a pilgrimage through various provinces.

From this time he became Mikoshi Nyudo (Mikoshi the Monk), gained enlightenment about the floating world, and wherever he went, thinking "could this be my child?" he would stretch his neck from behind to peer over and look at people. Because of this, everywhere people feared that "Mikoshi Nyudo (the Peering Monk) has appeared."
