現代語訳

ここにまた化け物の中でも心良からぬ悪者である、小猿方もご存知の「もうもんくわ」という者が、三歳ほどの人間の子を拾い、六、七年育てて山師どもと相談する。

「ああ、安いものだ。かつて桶桶、しゃんしゃんしゃん、顔か油舐め、色々馳走する」

山師の猫又が「色々」と言って三十五両に買い取る。

「白物が珍しい、踏み込んで買います。三十両で売って給え」

それより人間の子は猫又の手に渡り、山師の仲間である青鷺、狐、狸の類と相談の上、少しばかり芸を仕込み、大猿が下り、「人間の子」という幟を立て、深夜に及び、料理屋の広い小路において見世物にした。大きに当たった。

神輿入道がこの所を通りかかり、「もしや我が子か」と首ばかり葦簀張りより打ち入り見る。

「とんだものだ」

英語訳

Here again, among the monsters, there was a wicked one with an evil heart - a creature called "Mōmonkwa" (a type of demon), whom even Master Kosaru knew. This creature found a human child of about three years old, raised it for six or seven years, and consulted with mountain swindlers.

"Ah, what a bargain! Previously there were buckets, clanging sounds, face or oil-licking, various entertainments."

The mountain swindler cat-demon said "various things" and bought the child for thirty-five ryō.

"A fair-skinned one is rare - I'll step in and buy it. Sell it to me for thirty ryō."

From then on, the human child passed into the hands of the cat-demon, and after consulting with the mountain swindler's companions - herons, foxes, raccoon dogs and the like - they taught the child a few tricks. A large monkey came down, set up a banner reading "Human Child," and late into the night, they made it into a sideshow attraction in the wide alley of a restaurant district. It was a great success.

Mikoshi Nyudo happened to pass by this place, and thinking "Could this be my child?" he poked only his head through the reed screen to look.

"What a terrible thing!"
