現代語訳

密道は夜四つ頃まで遊んで、九つ過ぎに床に入り、いつもの通りいろいろと話などをして寝入ったが、井手野はそっと起きて、密道が鼻に手を当てて寝息を立てているのを確かめ、兵部の外へ出て行った。密道は寝入ったふりをしてそっと覗き見ると、今まで美しかった顔かたちが、いかにも凄まじい古猫の姿を現し、そばにあった海老を殻ごと一緒にがりがりと食べているのを見て、大いに驚いた。

【密道の台詞】
やれ恐ろしい。...は習うものだ。...何ともしらぬふりをして問うてやろう。

英語訳

Mitsudo played until around the hour of the Dog (around 8 PM), went to bed after the hour of the Rat (after midnight), and as usual engaged in various conversations before falling asleep. However, Ideno quietly got up, confirmed that Mitsudo was breathing with his hand on his nose, and went outside to the Hyobu quarters. Mitsudo pretended to be asleep and secretly peeked, only to see that what had been a beautiful face until now revealed the terrifying form of an old cat, crunching and eating nearby shrimp shells and all. He was greatly shocked by this sight.
