現代語訳

井手野は床へ入って密道が目を覚ましたため、「主、何か見なさったか」という顔つきの美しさは、今の猫とは全く違うと思うほかない。「いや、何も見はしない。これほど並んで狂うのに、何も隠すことはないだろう。俺の身の上も話すから、お前も身の上を話して聞かせろ」と誘いかける。

「俺は生来人間ではなく、御輿入道という化け物の子だが、つい人間に生まれ損なったから、幸いと女郎でも買って遊ぶのさ。主がどうあって話しなさるから、私も包まずに話しましょう。私の親は井出の山に化け猫という古猫でありましたが、その昔、仇をなし、ついに狩人の手にかかり、むなしくなりました。その時は、私はつめも隠さぬ時分で、それより段々成人して、何とぞ二又の家を相続しようと、近き頃より御殿山に住まい、修業のため、このところにて人を化かしなす。お前もそういう身の上ならば、どうぞ少しずつ化け習って、親御三輿の家を再び起こしなさるがよろしかろう」というものの、必ず悪く聞きなさるな。
