甚六は次第に付き合いが広くなり、少し読めなければ恥ずかしいと、学問を始め、四書五経のありがたいことをそこそこに覚え、唐詩を習い、お煎茶を少しは体験しようと読みたたえ、一経物でも評判記でも読めるようになると、万事のことを絡ませ、生まれもつかない鼻を高くして、大天狗から上前をとるくらいの高慢になり、騒がしいことを嫌い、静かな所を

好み、唐の方にも近寄りたく思うが、心のままにならないので、孔子も時に合わぬとおっしゃられたと、とてつもなく高くとまり、法律を見ると理屈詰めにしたがり、病気見舞いに行くと医者のような事を言い、この抜けるくらいの学問はなかなか並みや大抵のことではない。

Jinroku's social circle gradually expanded, and thinking it would be embarrassing if he couldn't read a little, he began studying. He learned the essentials of the Four Books and Five Classics to a reasonable degree, studied Chinese poetry, and praised himself for trying to experience the tea ceremony a bit. When he became able to read single-volume works and popular critiques, he would entangle everything together, putting on airs he wasn't born with, becoming so arrogant he could take commission from a great tengu, disliking noisy things, and preferring quiet places.

He wanted to get closer to Chinese culture, but since things didn't go as he wished, he would say that even Confucius said there were times that didn't suit him, putting on incredibly high airs. When he saw legal matters, he liked to argue them logically, and when visiting the sick, he would speak like a doctor. This kind of penetrating scholarship is by no means ordinary or commonplace.
