【右丁】
もはや吉松は良い若者になり、おとなしいうちに嫁をもらおうと、相応なところへ約束して決まり、吉日を選んで印を遣るつもりになった。阿呆な子はなお可愛いと、お父さんの甚六一人前にて行かぬ厄介者なれど、いつまでも天川屋の弟子のように前髪でも置かれず、結いのうの習いを幸いに謙服させてきたが、子どもの時は爪切りよりこのくらいが良いかと、出入りの医者殿の見立て、そればかりが楽しみは百両富のお札に着いているようなものである。

They made arrangements with a suitable family, and having chosen an auspicious day, they plan to send the formal engagement token. Though a foolish child is still endearing, father Jinroku is not yet a proper adult and remains a burden. Like an apprentice at Tenkawaya, he cannot even keep his forelocks properly arranged. Taking advantage of his inexperience in hair-styling, they have been making him submit to this treatment. Since childhood, the family doctor's assessment was "this level is better than nail-cutting," and that single hope is like being attached to a hundred-ryo lottery ticket.
