When they saw the crow perched there and urged the horse forward, the crow did not move. Finally, when they broke off the branch and took it, the crow remained motionless as if it were an artificial creation. Besides this, he performed various magical arts and astonished people's eyes with wondrous feats. Both sides arrived in Azuchi and set a date, and when the appointed time came and monks of various sects were seated in rows, the students of the Southern Barbarian temple attended with Burgomestre as their debate leader. At that time, Burgomestre wore robes of Shu red brocade and girded himself with a sword of about two feet in length as he advanced forward. From the Buddhist side, the elder Inkyo of Nanzen-ji temple faced him. Then Burgomestre asked, "What is the Buddha-dharma?" Elder Inkyo answered, "The mind itself is Buddha." Burgomestre asked again, "What is the profound meaning of 'the mind itself is Buddha'?" The elder answered again, "The mind itself is Buddha."
