[Nobunaga] greatly restrained them, saying "Religious debates exist to distinguish between orthodox and heretical teachings. Why should victory or defeat be decided through conflict? If anyone violates this principle, that shall be taken as proof of their inferiority." Because of this, the disturbance immediately subsided. At this point, a report came that Araki Settsu-no-kami Murashige of Settsu Province had allied with the Mōri of Chūgoku region. Nobunaga said, "This is an urgent matter. The dharma debate has not yet clearly determined orthodox from heretical or superior from inferior. They shall be summoned again for further discussion. Both sides should return to their temples." Since the religious debate remained inconclusive, the matter of destroying the new sect was also suspended. In the eleventh month of Tenshō 6 (1578), Takayama Ukon sided with the enemy and did not respond to Nobunaga's commands.
