extending to his ears, and his teeth were white as snow, like a horse's teeth. His nails resembled those of a bear's paws, his hair was mouse-colored, and he appeared to be about fifty years of age. His name was Urugan Bateren, and he was from a Nanban Christian country, having crossed over to propagate the religion of the Heavenly Emperor. Daily he wandered around the sacred shrines and Buddhist temples of Nagasaki, and people would gather in crowds to see his strange appearance. Some drew pictures of his unusual features and recorded them in writing, spreading these through the Chūgoku region and into the capital. Nobunaga, who was in Azuchi in Ōmi Province, heard of this and desired to summon him to see for himself, but considering that the lord Ryūzōji would try to detain him, he devised a stratagem and [used] a retainer of the Shōgun's house, [ ] Fukaya Gen'nai.
