上ノ草木ノ葉モキラメキ凄冷（モノスサマシキ）頃槇込ノ木ノ間
ヨリ怪シキ物現ハレ出タリ白衣ノ女髪ヲ亂シ
カケ苦シゲナル俤ニテ庭上ニ彳ミタリ簾中外
樣トモニ是ハ不可然御物好ミ御慰ニ成ヘカラス
現代語訳
して仰せになったのは「我はまだ幽霊という者を見たことがない。これをも出せるか」と尋問された。黄昏に及んで御庭に現わし申そうとて退出する。かくしてその時刻に至って両人を召し出す。両術師は傍の人に申して座中の燭の火を消させて障子を開き、庭上に九月十七日の月が幽かに照っていた時、風がざわめき雨が一通り降り過ぎて、庭上の草木の葉もきらめき、凄冷（ものすさまじき）頃、槇込みの木の間より怪しき物が現れ出た。白衣の女が髪を乱しかけ、苦しげなる面影にて庭上に佇んでいた。簾中の人々も外様共々に「これは不可然な御物好み、御慰みになるはずがない」
英語訳
[Hideyoshi] then declared: "I have never yet seen what is called a ghost. Can you also produce such a thing?" When questioned thus, [the magicians said they] would manifest it in the garden at twilight and withdrew. Thus, when that hour arrived, he summoned both men. The two sorcerers asked those nearby to extinguish the candle flames in the hall and opened the sliding doors. In the garden, the moon of the seventeenth day of the ninth month shone dimly. The wind rustled, a shower of rain passed over, and the leaves of the plants and trees in the garden glittered. In that eerily cold (mono-susamashiki) moment, from among the densely planted trees, a strange being appeared. A woman in white robes with disheveled hair and a suffering countenance stood in the garden. Both those behind the bamboo blinds and the outer retainers said: "This is improper entertainment; it cannot serve as pleasant diversion for His Lordship."
