アレハ秀吉公未タ木下藤吉ト云節ノ妾女菊ト
云女秀吉公御出世ノ後來テ宮仕ヲ願フト雖トモ
往昔被召仕時雜言ヲ云テ去リシヿ有ヲ以テ不
召仕菊女之ヲ聞大キニ憤テ怨言ヲ吐ケル故秀
吉公御手討ニシ玉ヒシ女ナリ兩人ノ者此事ヲ
知ルヘキヿナシ如何ナル因緣アツテ此女ヲ出
シケルヤアラ薄情ヤト思ハヌ者ナシ果シテ秀
吉公顔色不快ニテ術師ヲ出サ令ム秀吉公宣ク
此者共ノ術竒怪千萬也是必南蠻寺ノ殘黨共ナ

と見る中に歩み寄り御縁側に近づくのを、よくよく御覧になれば、秀吉公がまだ木下藤吉と言った節の妾女で菊という女であった。秀吉公の御出世の後、来て宮仕えを願ったけれども、往昔お召し使いになった時に雑言を言って去ったことがあったので、お召し使いにならなかった。菊女はこれを聞いて大いに憤って怨言を吐いたので、秀吉公が御手討ちにされた女である。両人の者はこの事を知るはずがない。いかなる因縁があってこの女を出したのであろうか。薄情だと思わぬ者はなかった。果たして秀吉公は顔色が不快になって術師を退出させた。秀吉公が仰せになるには「この者共の術は奇怪千万である。これは必ず南蛮寺の残党共であろう

As they watched, [the apparition] walked closer and approached the veranda. When [Hideyoshi] looked carefully, it was a woman named Kiku, who had been a concubine of Lord Hideyoshi back when he was still called Kinoshita Tōkichi. After Lord Hideyoshi's rise to power, she came seeking to serve at court, but since she had spoken ill words and left when she was employed in the past, he did not take her into service. When the woman Kiku heard this, she became greatly enraged and uttered words of resentment, so Lord Hideyoshi had her executed by his own hand. There was no way these two men could have known of this matter. What sort of karmic connection could there have been for them to conjure this woman? There was no one who did not think it heartless. Indeed, Lord Hideyoshi's countenance became displeased, and he ordered the sorcerers to leave. Lord Hideyoshi declared: "These men's sorcery is exceedingly strange and suspicious. They must surely be remnants of the Nanban temples
