かぐ鼻（はな）は鼻をいからし其外一座に有あふたる
牛頭馬頭（ごづめづ）阿防羅刹（あほうらせつ）まで額（ひたい）の角（つの）を振（ふり）立て
感（かん）ずる声止ざりければ閻王覚へず目をひらき
御覧しけるに越（こよ）なふあてやかなるに心 動（うこき）初
笑しことはどこへやら只 茫然（ほうぜん）と空蝉（うつせみ）のもぬけ
のごとくになりて覚ず玉座（きよくさ）よりころび落
給へば皆々 驚（おどろき）いたき起（おこ）し奉れば漸正気付せ
給ひため息（いき）をほつとつき扨〳〵かた〳〵が見る
前 面目（めんぼく）もなき事ながら我思はずも此絵姿
のみやびやかなるに迷（まよい）たる心を何と遍照（へんぜう）が歌
のさまなる我ふるまひ扨つく〳〵と按（あん）ずるに古
より美人の聞え数もかぎらぬ其中にもまた
ならぶべき人もなし西施（せいし）がまなじり小町が
眉（まゆ）楊貴妃（やうきひ）か唇（くちびる）赫奕姫（かくやてひめ）が鼻筋（はなすじ）飛燕（ひえん）が腰（こし）
つき衣通姫（そとほりひめ）の衣裳（いしやう）の着（き）こなしひつくるめたる
此 姿（すがた）桐（きり）は御 守殿（しゆでん）山丹（ひめゆり）は娘盛（むすめざかり）と瞿麦（なてしこ）のなどゝ
は並（なみ）〳〵の事花にも月にも菩薩（ぼさつ）にも又ある
べきともおもほえずまして唐日本の地にかゝる
もの二度生ずべきにあらざれば我も是より
冥府（めいふ）の王位を捨（すて）娑婆に出て此者と枕（まくら）をかわ
現代語訳
かぐ鼻は鼻をいからし、その他一座にいる牛頭馬頭や阿房羅刹までが額の角を振り立てて感嘆する声が止まなかったので、閻魔王は思わず目を開いて御覧になった。すると、この上なく上品で美しい女性に心を動かされ、最初の笑いはどこへやら、ただ茫然と空蝉の抜け殻のようになって、知らず知らずのうちに玉座から転び落ちてしまった。皆々が驚いて起こし奉ると、ようやく正気づいて、ため息をほっとついて言った。
「まったく、皆が見ている前で面目もないことだが、私は思わずこの絵姿の優雅なことに心を奪われてしまった。何という遍照の歌のような我が振る舞いよ。さてつくづくと考えてみるに、古来美人として名高い者は数限りないが、その中でも並ぶべき人はいない。西施のまなざし、小野小町の眉、楊貴妃の唇、かぐや姫の鼻筋、趙飛燕の腰つき、衣通姫の衣装の着こなし―これらをすべて兼ね備えたこの姿よ。桐は御守殿、山丹は娘盛りと撫子などというのは並々のこと。花にも月にも菩薩にも、またあるべきとも思えない。まして中国や日本の地にこのような者が二度生まれるはずもないのだから、私もこれより冥府の王位を捨て、娑婆に出てこの者と枕を交わそう」
英語訳
Kagu-hana flared his nostrils, and the other attendants in the assembly—Gozu-mezu (Ox-head Horse-head) and Ahō-rasetsu (Foolish demons)—raised the horns on their foreheads, and their voices of admiration would not cease. King Enma inadvertently opened his eyes to look, and his heart was moved by this supremely elegant and beautiful woman. His initial laughter disappeared, and he became utterly dazed like the empty shell of a cicada, unknowingly tumbling from his jeweled throne. When everyone was startled and helped him up, he finally came to his senses, let out a deep sigh, and said:
"Truly, though I have no face to show before everyone watching, I was unexpectedly captivated by the gracefulness of this painted figure. What behavior of mine, like Henshō's poetry! Now, reflecting deeply, while beautiful women renowned since ancient times are countless, among them there is none who could compare. Xi Shi's gaze, Ono no Komachi's eyebrows, Yang Guifei's lips, Princess Kaguya's nose bridge, Zhao Feiyan's waistline, Princess Sotōri's manner of wearing clothes—this figure combines all of these. To say 'paulownia is the guardian hall, mountain lily is in her maiden prime' and such about wild pinks is merely ordinary. She seems beyond comparison to flowers, moon, or even bodhisattvas. Moreover, since such a being could never be born twice in the lands of China or Japan, I too shall abandon my throne in the underworld and go forth to the mortal world to share a pillow with this one."
