中では1寸5分、棟（むね）では2寸あり、三か所を合わせて平均すると1寸5分ずつのふき足となる。幅3寸の葺き板で右の36坪を葺く場合に、葺き板が何枚必要かと問う時：
○ 3万3千8百枚入るという
計算法：4225（※）に36坪を掛けると1521（正しくは15210）となる。これを右に別に置いて、また左に板の幅3寸を屋根のふき足1寸5分に掛けると4.5（四五）となる。これで右の1521（15210）を割ると、3万3千8百枚と分かる。

Calculation method: Place 1 ken 1 shaku 5 sun on the right. Multiply only the 1-ken portion by 6 shaku 5 sun to get 8 shaku. Multiply this by the length of 72 ken to get 576. Divide this by 6 shaku 5 sun to get 88 tsubo 6 bu 1 rin 5 mō.
**Problem:** When a roof area is 36 tsubo and you wish to cover it with kokerabuki (thin wooden shingles), how many shingles are needed? At the eave, the exposed length (fuki-ashi) is 1 sun;

in the middle it is 1 sun 5 bu; at the ridge it is 2 sun. Taking these three positions together, the average exposed length is 1 sun 5 bu per shingle. When covering the said 36 tsubo with shingles that are 3 sun wide, how many shingles will be needed?
○ Answer: 33,800 shingles are needed.
Calculation method: Multiply 4,225 by 36 tsubo to get 152,100. Set this aside on the right. Then on the left, multiply the shingle width of 3 sun by the exposed length (fuki-ashi) of 1 sun 5 bu to get 4.5. Divide the 152,100 on the right by this to get 33,800 shingles.
