【図：左手に三角形に折った鼻紙（はなかみ）を持ち、その斜線に沿って松の木の先端を見据える男の絵。その上にテキスト】
方法：鼻紙を四角（正方形）に折り、さらに角と角を合わせて折り、下の角に小石を紙の上からつり下げて（錘として垂らして）、紙の上の両角（かど）の直角が合う箇所で（斜辺を通して）見るべし。立っている場所から木の根元まで間竿（けんざお）にて測ってみると、七間（しちけん）ある。これに居丈（いだけ）を三尺加える時に、木の長さ七間半という也。

**Method:** Fold a piece of *hanagami* (nose paper/facial tissue) into a square, then fold it again corner to corner diagonally. Hang a small pebble from the bottom corner as a plumb weight from the paper. Sight along the line where the upper two corners of the paper form a right angle (i.e., along the hypotenuse). From the spot where you are standing, measure the distance to the base of the tree using a *kenza* (surveying rod); it comes to 7 *ken*. When you add your own standing height (*idake*) of 3 *shaku* to this, the length (height) of the tree is said to be 7 *ken* and a half.
