【巻下十八丁裏】
一 八角のをもて六寸つゝ有時これに三寸の金／薄（はく）
なにほと入そと問時

一 八角形の面（おもて）が六寸ずつある時、これに三寸の金箔はどれほど入るかと問う時に、

○一寸坪で百七十三坪八分三厘あり
○三寸箔で十九枚三分一厘入る
計算法：六寸を左右に置いて掛けると三十六になる。これに二を掛けると七十二になる。これを八角形の係数〔0.〕四一四二で割ると、百七十三坪八分三厘と分かる。またこれを九で割ると、十九枚三分一厘と分かる。
以上の計算はこのとおりであるが、（実際には）余裕を見て（多めに）入れるものである。

【巻下十九丁表】
《題：第二十 材木の事》
一 三寸角の二間（けん）木が四百本ある時、これを四寸角の二間木に換算すると、四寸角はどれほどになるかと問う時に、
○四寸角二百二十五本という。
計算法：三寸を左右に置いて掛けると九坪になる。これを四百本に掛けると三千六百になる。これを右に別に置く。また左に四寸を二か所に置いて掛けると十六になる。これで右の三千六百を割ると、四寸角二百二十五本と分かる。
一 八寸角の三間木が七本ある時に、五寸角の二間木と〔以下次ページへ続く〕

1. When an octagonal object has sides of 6 sun each, one asks how many sheets of 3-sun gold foil are needed to cover it.

○In square sun units: 173 tsubo, 8 bu, 3 rin
○3-sun foil needed: 19 sheets, 3 bu, 1 rin
Method: Place 6 sun on both the left and right and multiply them together, giving 36. Multiply this by 2, giving 72. Divide this by the octagonal coefficient 0.4142, and the result is 173 tsubo, 8 bu, 3 rin. Divide this further by 9, and the result is 19 sheets, 3 bu, 1 rin.
The calculations above are as shown; however, in practice one should allow for some extra margin.

*Topic 20: On Timber*
1. When there are 400 pieces of 3-sun-square timber of 2-ken length, and one wishes to convert them into 4-sun-square timber of 2-ken length, one asks how many pieces of 4-sun-square timber this equals.
○The answer is 225 pieces of 4-sun-square timber.
Method: Place 3 sun on both the left and right and multiply them together, giving 9 tsubo. Multiply this by 400 pieces, giving 3,600. Set this aside on the right. Next, place 4 sun in two positions on the left and multiply them together, giving 16. Divide the 3,600 on the right by this, and the result is 225 pieces of 4-sun-square timber.
