[Volume 2, Folio 22, Verso]
1. When 2-ken timber of 6-sun-square cross-section is priced at 4 monme 5 bu 5 rin per piece, and one has a piece of 6-sun-square timber of 5-shaku length, one asks: at the same price, how much does a 5-shaku piece cost?
○ The price of a 6-sun-square piece of 5-shaku length is 1 monme 7 bu 5 rin.
Method: Multiply the price of a 6-sun-square 2-ken timber, 4 monme 5 bu 5 rin, by 5 shaku, giving 2,275. Divide this by 1 jō 3 shaku (= 13 shaku), and the result is known to be 1 monme 7 bu 5 rin.
1. When a round log has a diameter (さしわたし) of 5 sun and a length of 1 jō 6 shaku 2 sun 5 bu, and one wishes to cut it into a 5-sun-square timber, one asks: what length does it become?
○ It becomes 1 jō 3 shaku in length as a 5-sun-square timber.
---
[Volume 2, Folios 23–24, Recto]
Method: Multiply 1 jō 6 shaku 2 sun 5 bu by [0.]8 (八), and one obtains 1 jō 3 shaku. Multiplying by [0.]79 also works.
When a 5-sun-square timber has a length of 1 jō 3 shaku, and one wishes to know the length of a round log of 5-sun diameter that would yield it, one asks: what is the length?
○ It becomes 1 jō 6 shaku 2 sun 5 bu.
Method: Divide 1 jō 3 shaku by [0.]8, and the result is found as above. ○ Dividing by [0.]79 also gives a good result.
1. When a round log has a diameter of 6 sun, and one wishes to square it off (cut it into a square cross-section timber), one asks: what size square timber does it become?
○ It becomes a square timber of 5 sun 3 bu 3 rin 3 mō per side.
