【Left Page】 Records of Shipwrecked People's Return to Japan Ōtani Akijirō Denzō (also known as Fudenosuke, then 38 years old) from Usa-ura, Takaoka District; Jūsuke, his brother (24 years old); Gozaemon, his brother (16 years old); Toraemon from Ryōhama in the same bay (6 years old); and Manjirō from Nakahama-ura, Hakata District (15 years old). These individuals used a small boat owned by Denzō of Usa-ura for fishing hota (also called okishiira) and loaded the boat with two to of rice, firewood, water, lanterns, and other supplies. They departed from Usa-ura at the fourth hour of the morning on the fifth day of the first month of Tenpō 12 (the year of the Metal Ox). They proceeded to Okitsu Cape and anchored there. On the same sixth day, they departed from the same location and sailed out into the southern ocean, caught a few small fish with drift lines, and spent the night at a white beach near that cape. On the morning of the seventh day, they were blown offshore by local winds, but when the wind calmed, there were about twenty boats around them, all of which had sailed out to deeper waters. However, since Denzō's boat had weak stern oars, they were fishing for mackerel with lines about five or six ri offshore from Mount Ashizuri. Around noon, when a following wind began to blow, they raised their lines and tried to sail toward shore with their sail, but it became calm again. While setting their drift lines, a northwest wind began to blow and the sea became extremely rough, so they discarded half their drift lines and tried to row toward shore, but the wind grew even stronger and they could not maneuver the boat as desired. Although everyone exhausted their strength working together, the stern oars...
