[The lord] presented his thanks, and thereafter made his rounds of courtesy calls (mawarikin) to the Senior Councillors (rōjū) and Junior Councillors (wakadoshiyori). Kuranosuke, having ascended to the Nishi-no-maru (Western Citadel), was instructed by the inspectors (o-metsuke) to remain at the Honmaru (Main Citadel) as there were gift items to be received there. In the Hinoki-no-ma (Hall of Cypress), Senior Councillor Hotta Sagami-no-kami (Masasuke) appeared in person and informed [Kuranosuke] that he was granted three rolls of chirimen (silk crepe) from the Ōgosho-sama (the Retired Shōgun).
He was also informed by the Attached Senior Councillor Nishio Oki-no-kami (Tadanao) that he was granted three rolls of sayā (glossy silk) from the Dainagon-sama (the Great Counselor / heir). The gift items were conveyed by the Sōja-ban (Master of Ceremonies). After withdrawing, [Kuranosuke] changed into half-kamishimo (semi-formal wear) at the stables under the care of Lord Suwabe Bunemon, and made his rounds to the Senior and Junior Councillors, accompanied by o-saki-te (advance guard official) Lord Tokuyama Gohei.
Item: On the same day, a summons was issued by the Duty Councillor Lord Sakai Uta-no-kami (Tadayuki), and the resident representative (o-rusui) attended, whereupon he was informed by written notice that, as the hawk granted as a gift was roosting, it would be handed over when it departed from its roost.
Item: On the nineteenth day of the fourth month, [the lord] paid courtesy visits (o-aitai o-tsutome) to the Duty Councillor Lord Sakai Uta-no-kami (Tadayuki) and to the Nishi-no-maru Senior Councillor Nishio Oki-no-kami (Tadanao).
Item: On the same day, the horse granted as a gift was led over by a messenger from the Duty Councillor Lord Sakai Uta-no-kami (Tadayuki).
Item: On the same day, the repair of the main castle bridge (o-honjō-bashi) was completed, and there was a ceremony for its inaugural crossing (watari-some).
Item: On the same day, a summons was issued by the Duty Councillor Lord Sakai Uta-no-kami (Tadayuki), and the resident representative Tsuda Kuemon (Morihiro) attended, whereupon [he was informed that] as there had been gift items granted from the Ōgosho-sama on the occasion of the current leave (o-itoma) and the Shōgun's envoy (jōshi), regarding the matter of tribute offerings (kenjōmono) at the time of dispatching a messenger of thanks upon the lord's return to his domain, [the answer was communicated] by way of an attached note (o-fudatsuki) appended to the letter of inquiry submitted on the eighteenth, the previous day, with the献 [offering/presentation — text continues on next page]...
