万石以下之面々町家作之町屋敷
武備手当之ため分限ニ応し
所持いたし候儀は不苦旨被
仰出候以来屋敷改え相届直名前
ニ而所持罷在右地借店借之者
ともへ施遣候者共重モニ有之候
以前は右名前を以称遣し候儀と
相聞候武士家来を称誉仕候例
相見へ不申儀ニ御座候
右ニ付武士家来「御用達町人共等は
私共御役所え呼出誉置可申之処
少分之施行仕候もの迄左様取計候」

万石以下の面々が町家作りの町屋敷を、武備手当てのため分限に応じて所持することは差し支えない旨仰せ出され候以来、屋敷改めに相届け、直名前にて所持罷り在り、右の地借り・店借りの者共へ施し遣わし候者共、重立った者これあり候。以前は右の名前を以て称遣し候儀と相聞き候。武士家来を称誉仕り候例は相見え申さざる儀にござい候。
右につき武士家来「御用達町人共等は、私共御役所へ呼び出し誉め置き申すべきの処、少分の施行仕り候者まで左様取り計らい候」
英語訳
Since it was announced that retainers of ten thousand koku or less may possess town-style merchant residences according to their means for military preparedness purposes, they have reported to the residence inspection office and possess them under their direct names. Among those who provided relief to tenants and shop renters on these properties, there were many prominent individuals. Previously, it is heard that they were commended using these names. There appear to be no precedents for praising samurai retainers.
Regarding this matter, concerning samurai retainers: "While licensed merchants and such should be summoned to our office and praised, even those who performed small acts of charity are being handled in this manner."
