如くて幾千万の歳も経【經】るとも更に変る事はなきものならん
然るに天照大御神は既神去りませしと思ひ其の世に在せし都
城も論ひ甚しきに至りては其の山陵の御在所を
求メする族の有るてこれそ護意の人とはいふへかりけるまた大御
国【國】の神の道せて学へるにも地震の如き災異あれて其を
過津日神の所為と思へるそなほこたてしそも〳〵過津日神
も称すこと遖【あっぱれ　国字】なるものゝ枉【まが】れる名にして災異にあつかる神にも
あらす故次に遖日神そあれます【生れ坐す＝出現なさる。】なり大御国【國】の神の道は水には
水の神罔象あり火には火の神加遇突智あり地震も地震の
神ありて洪水火災地震は皆其の神のあらひませるものなれ
は其の神の御心をなこめまつるそ大御国【國】の道の旨趣
なりける然れは地震の神と称し奉るも今予か考ふる須佐之男命
大穴牟遅命の二神にて地震は此の神のあらひませるものな
れは人皆其の神の稜威を恐れみ慎むより外はなき事
なりける

現代語訳

状態で幾千万年経っても決して変わることはないものであろう。

ところが天照大御神はすでに神去りになったと思い、その神が在世された都城についても議論が激しく、甚だしくはその陵墓の御在所を探し求める人々がいる。これこそ無分別な人と言うべきであろう。また我が国の神の道さえ学んでいながら、地震のような災異があってそれを過津日神の仕業と思うのは、なお理解が足りない。そもそも過津日神と称することは立派なものの、誤った名前で、災異に関わる神でもない。ゆえに次に正津日神がお現れになるのである。我が国の神の道では、水には水の神である罔象女神があり、火には火の神である迦具突智神がある。地震にも地震の神があって、洪水・火災・地震は皆その神が現れたものであるから、その神の御心を和らげ奉るのが我が国の道の趣旨なのである。

それゆえに地震の神と申し上げるのも、今私が考察する須佐之男命・大穴牟遅命の二神であって、地震はこの神が現れたものであるから、人は皆その神の威力を恐れ慎む以外にはすることがないのである。

However, some think that Amaterasu Omikami has already departed from this world, and there is fierce debate about the capital cities where she resided. Some even go so far as to search for the location of her imperial mausoleum. These people should truly be called senseless. Moreover, even those who have studied the way of the gods of our country think that when disasters like earthquakes occur, they are the work of Katsu-hi-no-kami, which shows insufficient understanding. The name Katsu-hi-no-kami, while splendid-sounding, is an erroneous name, and this is not a deity involved in disasters. Therefore, it is Masa-tsu-hi-no-kami who appears next. In the way of the gods of our country, water has Mizuhanome-no-kami as the god of water, fire has Kagutsuchi-no-kami as the god of fire. Earthquakes also have their earthquake deity, and floods, fires, and earthquakes are all manifestations of their respective gods. Therefore, appeasing the hearts of these gods is the essential purpose of our country's way.

Thus, what we respectfully call the earthquake deities are the two gods I now contemplate: Susanoo-no-Mikoto and Onamuji-no-Mikoto. Since earthquakes are manifestations of these gods, people have no choice but to fear and be cautious of their divine power.
