現代語訳
『事類後集』に曰く、「狐の一つの名は紫夜（しや）とも言う。尾を打って火を灯し、髑髏を頂き、北斗の星を拝む。その頭に頂いた髑髏が落ちないことを得て、よく人を化かす」とかや。
さても小津友三郎（おまんの夫）は、女房おまんを何者とも知れぬ者に殺され、行く方も知れぬゆえ、無念に思い、委細を書き置きして仇を尋ねようと立ち出て、浦々山々谷々まで探し、様子を窺っていた。

英語訳
According to the "Jirui Kōshū" (Collection of Categorized Records), "One name for the fox is also called 'Shiya' (Purple Night). It strikes its tail to light fires, bears a skull on its head, and worships the Big Dipper constellation. Having mastered the art of keeping the skull balanced on its head without falling, it becomes skilled at deceiving people."
Now, Ozu Tomosaburō (Oman's husband), whose wife Oman had been killed by some unknown person whose whereabouts were also unknown, felt deep resentment. He wrote down all the details, and set out to search for her killer, traveling to bays, mountains, and valleys, investigating the circumstances.
