【Right Page】 Showing no emotion, Taminosuke sat despondently, but upon hearing his father's words, he immediately drew the wakizashi at his side and attempted seppuku. Seeing this, everyone was shocked and embraced him to stop him. His grandmother, though unable to walk properly, crawled over with the others, saying "Don't be rash. Whatever happens, we'll go along with your wishes." They all tried to calm him. He lamented, "This life is worthless anyway. Rather than watch grandmother and father suffer such hardships, please let me die." His father wiped his tearful eyes and said, "Your devotion would not be inferior to the stories of fish under ice or bamboo shoots in snow. Though you've often been scolded for being obstinate and rash, at only twelve 【Left Page】 or thirteen years old, you have a noble spirit beyond your years. At this point, even if I tried to stop you, you wouldn't be stopped. I'll leave it to your wishes. However, I raised you until this age intending to find you a good master, have you serve, and make your way in the world. But because of this worthless father, you must endure hardship and suffering at such a tender age - what a pitiful situation." With Chōuemon supporting his trembling hand, he pressed his seal to the contract. The grandmother and mother clung to him on both sides, stroking his hair through their tears, with countless memories flooding their hearts, leaving them speechless. Both were overcome with grief, and they brought forward a prepared bamboo palanquin for Taminosuke.
