よらねば顔と顔とを見合てとかふの詞も出ざれば
長右衛門引とりてない習（ならひ）でもござらねば￣マアそふでもして
身の代で諸方の借金をもつくのひ人参でも調て
心ながふ養生（ようじやう）なされいいつも闇（やみ）ではない習（なら）ひわし
が請に立からは金さへ出来￣リヤ何時でも請返さふと
自由（しゆう）な事御子息の孝行を無にせまいと思ふ故
夕￣アから夜も寝（ね）ずに京へ六里のたて通し
兼て懇意（こんい）の親（おや）方故諸事しめくゝりして置（おき）た
れば判さへ出来れば金渡さふと詞に付て扇屋も
長右殿の咄（はなし）に違（ちが）はす孝行といひ器量といひ目

ば飛（とひ）つく程（ほど）慾（ほし）いから六年切て百両と金子の

どうしようもなくて、顔と顔とを見合わせて、何とも言葉が出ないので、長右衛門が引き取って「珍しい習慣でもありませんし、まあそうでもして身代で諸方の借金も作って、人参でも調えて心長く養生なさい。いつも闇ではない習いです。私が請け人に立つからは、金さえできれば、いつでも請け戻そうと自由なこと。お子息の孝行を無にするまいと思うゆえ、夕方から夜も寝ずに京へ六里を立て続けに通し、かねてから懇意の親方ゆえ諸事取りまとめて置いたので、判さえできれば金を渡そう」という言葉につけて、扇屋も長右衛門殿の話に違わず、孝行といい器量といい、目

Because I don't want to make your son's filial piety meaningless, I traveled six ri to Kyoto without sleeping from evening through the night. Since he's a master I've long been on good terms with, I've arranged everything beforehand, so if you just agree, I'll hand over the money." Following these words, Ōgiya agreed with Chōuemon's proposal, saying that both his filial piety and his appearance showed promise to the eye.

Since there was so much to appreciate, and he wanted this child so much he would leap at the chance, he offered a bundle of one hundred ryō for a six-year contract. The father raised his tear-stained face and said: "Everyone's kindness and my son's filial piety are more than generous, but I too am a masterless samurai with circumstances. However much I may be pressed by poverty and troubled by illness, to sell my only son with prospects in heaven and earth, and sustain my life with the price of his body, would be like eating my own child's flesh. I would have no excuse before my ancestors, and would be lower than dogs and cats. Even if I must chew sand and starve to death, this absolutely cannot be allowed." This was his understandable response.
