市川栢車と書終り四十四歳を一／期（ご）とし
明和四年亥四月中の二日子の下刻（けこく）眠（ねむ）るがごと
き臨終（りんじう）に人々夢の心地にて前後不／覚（かく）の
歎（なげ）ぎの体（てい）目もあてられぬ次第なり扨有
べきにしもあらざれば野辺（のべ）の送（おく）り取おこなひ
所縁（ゆかり）有／菩提所（ほだいしよ）なれば下谷の常林寺（じやうりんじ）に葬（ほうむり）て
蓮華院（れんげいん）詠行（ゑいかう）信士（しんじ）と書（かき）しるす印（しるし）の石は朽（くち）
せねど贔屓の人の涙（なみた）の雨朽ぬ袂（たもと）はなかり

市川栢車と書き終り、四十四歳を一期として、
明和四年亥四月中の二日子の下刻、眠るような
臨終に、人々は夢心地で前後不覚の
嘆きの様子、目も当てられない次第である。さて当然の
ことながら野辺の送りを取り行い、
所縁のある菩提所であるから下谷の常林寺に葬って、
蓮華院詠行信士と書き記す。印の石は朽ち
ることはないが、贔屓の人の涙の雨で朽ちない袂は
なかった。

Having finished writing "Ichikawa Hakusha," at the age of forty-four as his final moment,
on the second day of the fourth month of Meiwa 4 (1767), year of the boar, at the hour of the rat's latter quarter, he passed away peacefully as if falling asleep.
Everyone was in a dreamlike state, overcome with grief
beyond comprehension, a sight too painful to behold. Then, as was
natural, they conducted the funeral procession to the graveyard,
and since there was a temple connection, he was buried at Jōrinji Temple in Shitaya,
with the posthumous name Rengein Eikō Shinji inscribed. Though the stone marker will not
decay, there were no sleeves that did not decay from the rain of tears
shed by those who held him dear.
