芥子味噌が鼻の穴まで抜け目のない鉄門屋の仕出し料理で、春返しの筍には石女に燈心を当てがい、硯蓋の蓮根には極楽の根太を外す死手の山芋、三途川の鱒、八寒地獄の煮凝りに西の河原の地蔵焼き、好み次第飲み次第で、夜のうちからの人々の群集。これぞこの地の名物だと言葉の塩に銭を出して、辛い浮世に甘い連中も暮れを限りに立ち帰れば、あとは人声も波の音ばかりして、更けゆく夜半のそよそよ風に草木も自然と居眠りをゆする。星の光がかすかな闇路はるかに声を立てて

迷い子の「閻魔様あ」と鐘太鼓の音哀れげに、小提灯の明かりを頼りにうそぶく物寂しい三途川のほとり。西を東、南を北と立ち別れ、尋ね疲れて追々にとある芝原を目印に、赤鬼黒鬼、斑鬼、茶色、萌黄、碁盤縞と五色八色さまざまの顔立ち。一角両角、一眼二眼、牛頭馬頭、阿修羅刹など異類異形の獄卒どもが一箇所へ寄り集まり、「これほどに探しても閻魔様のお行方知れず、地獄極楽始まって以来どないな旦那の駆け落ち探しに出るこちらが難儀」と口々にわめき散らし振り回す。

The Tetsumon-ya's catering service is so shrewd that even mustard miso penetrates to the nostrils. For spring bamboo shoots, they provide lamp wicks to barren women; for lotus roots like inkstone lids, they remove the floor joists of paradise with dead hands' yams, Sanzu River trout, frozen jelly from the eight cold hells, and Jizo grilling from the western riverbank - all according to preference and as much as one can drink. From nightfall onward, crowds of people gather. "These are this region's specialties," they say, paying money for the salt of words. Even those who find sweetness in this bitter floating world return home when evening ends, leaving behind only human voices and the sound of waves. In the deepening midnight's gentle breeze, plants and trees naturally nod in slumber. In the distant dark path where starlight dimly shines, voices cry out.

A lost child calls "Lord Enma!" with the pitiful sound of bells and drums, relying on the light of a small lantern, whistling forlornly around the lonely banks of the Sanzu River. Separating west from east, south from north, exhausted from searching, they gradually use a certain grass field as a landmark. Red demons, black demons, spotted demons, brown ones, light green ones, checkered ones - demons of five colors and eight colors with various facial features.
