【Right Page】
Strike the drum twice with full force《Marginal note: Strike using two drumsticks. The left stick strikes only for form, while the right stick strikes strongly》. Also, although the first left is the pursuing horse, due to appreciation and following old custom, the shrine priest instructs the left and right attendants to call for a crossing attack《Marginal note: During the small flourish, two attendants come to the center of the barriers and inform the organizers of this matter》. Therefore, they make the left horse run first《Marginal note: This is called "the departure of the departing horse"》. When it reaches near the end of the barriers, they make the right horse run. Therefore, making the right side the loser is the established rule. Also, when the first left rider falls from his horse before the decisive spear thrust, due to a direct entry, the right rider dismounts, and this is still an old practice《Marginal note: and so forth》.
Next, when the left and right horses of the first match finish running, at that time an official strikes the large drum at the left pavilion.
【Left Page】
《Marginal note: However, this is struck when the left horse finishes driving past the decisive spear thrust. For others》
《Marginal note: The striking method is the same as for gongs and drums. Regardless of victory or defeat, after both left and right drive past the decisive spear thrust, strike once with full force. However, in case of direct entry, there is no need to strike》. Also, they have the attendants display the signal fan on the right lower steps《Marginal note: When the left side wins, they display a red-ground folding fan》
《Marginal note: When the right side wins, they display a blue-ground folding fan. When holding them, both sides display them side by side, each raising them to the center for viewing. Therefore, at the right lower steps as well, they respond accordingly by displaying and showing the folding fan of that color. Of course, for the first match, according to custom》
《Marginal note: After displaying the red-ground folding fan, the attendants record the sequence of victories and defeats in the match listing at the left and right pavilions, and this ceremony continues the same way through the tenth match》
In this ceremony, the left rider arrives at the base of the southwest pillar of the lower steps pavilion, facing northwest. At that time, following old custom, the lower officials announce his victory and present reward silk《Marginal note: However, the silk is handled by the attendants}}。
The shrine attendant hangs it on a pole and presents it to the rider, and after the ceremonial gift-giving, returns to the lower officials and completes the mutual bowing. For the right side《Crossed out: they announce the defeat. Therefore, no reward silk is presented. Although defeated, following custom, they dismount at the end of the barriers and withdraw to the shrine grounds. Therefore, they do not arrive at the right lower steps area》
