ごた混ぜの連中を引き連れて、向こう島がいらっしゃいました。
【えん二郎】「京山さんや、文京さんとは違って、青楼（遊郭）へはまったくいらっしゃいませんね。俳諧と義太夫はひどいもんだ」
などと言いながら、腰から越後屋仕立ての、あんぺら（葦簀）の内縫いの（煙草入れを出し）……
【ト書き】「そうだ」と言いながら腰から、越後屋仕立てのあんぺらの内縫い、竜佐の根付けのついた下げ煙草入れから煙管を出して吸い付ける。女房はせんとくの火鉢にかかっている色島屋勘の茶をついで両人へ出す。喜之介は寄りかかっている、俵屋宗理が描いた菊の板戸棚から、豆の入ったこんぺい糖を出し、
【喜之介】「これでもお上がりなさい」
（と、えん二郎の前に置く。）
【えん二郎】「えんさんがお酒を飲まれないのは、玉に瑕ですよ。」
【喜之介】「名誉なことに、今は下戸だよ」
（と、うれしがらせる。）
「しあんさんには良いものがある。昨日、長崎屋のこはんのところから隅田川（のお酒）をもらった。お燗をさせよう。しかし、肴が何もないでしょうねえ。」
【しあん】「燗見舞いの昆布巻はないのか。あの鍋のは何だ？」
【えん二郎】「欲気なことを言うやつだ。」
【おちせ】「おいしいものではありませんよ。今朝のお味噌汁でございます。」
【しあん】（ずっと立って鍋の蓋を開け）「おきやがれ。とら（ふ）汁が冷え切っている。きっと松葉屋の晦日豆腐だ、こいつは。冷たくてかなわない。」

As he says this, he reaches to his waist for [his tobacco pouch]—a pouch lined with woven reed (anpera), tailored by Echigoya...
[Stage direction] Saying "Indeed," he reaches to his waist, draws out a pipe from a woven-reed-lined tobacco pouch made by Echigoya, fitted with a Ryūsa netsuke, and begins to smoke. The wife pours tea from Iroshimaya Kan's teapot sitting on the sentry-box brazier and serves it to the two men. Kinosuke, leaning against a cupboard with sliding doors painted by Tawaraya Sōri depicting chrysanthemums, takes out some konpeitō (sugar candies) containing beans.
[Kinosuke] "Please, help yourself to some of these."
(Places them in front of Enjirō.)
[Enjirō] "It's a shame thatEn-san doesn't drink—that's his one flaw."
[Kinosuke] "It's something to be proud of, actually—I'm a teetotaler these days."
(Saying this to make the other feel pleased.)
"Now, Shian-san, I have something good. Yesterday I received some Sumidagawa [sake] from Kohan at the Nagasakiya. Let's warm it up. But I suppose there's nothing to go with it as a snack, is there?"
[Shian] "Isn't there any konbu-maki [kelp roll] as a warming gift? What's in that pot over there?"
[Enjirō] "What a greedy fellow."
[Ochise] "It's nothing special, really. It's this morning's miso soup."
[Shian] (Getting up and lifting the lid of the pot) "Oh, come off it. The tofu soup has gone completely cold. This must be Matsubaya's end-of-the-month tofu, I'll wager. It's so cold I can't bear it."
