に平（たいら）げ難（がた）きものなり初発（しよほつ）纔（わづか）の下疳（げかん）などには膏薬（かうやく）或（あるひ）
は付薬（つけぐすり）又は十日廿日の薬にて一度（ひとたび）治（ぢ）するときは何（なに）より
心（こころ）易（やす）き病（やまひ）の様（やう）に思（おも）ひ薬を服（ふく）せず劇剤（げきざい）をきらひ毒食（どくしよく）
房事（ぼうじ）を慎（つゝし）まず其（その）初（はじめ）を疎（おろそか）にするゆへに次第（しだい）に病毒（びやうどく）深（ふか）

一度に治すことは困難なものである。初発のわずかな下疳などには軟膏あるいは塗り薬、また十日二十日の薬で一度治ると、何よりも簡単な病気のように思い、薬を服用せず劇薬を嫌い、毒性のある食物や房事を慎まず、その初期を疎かにするために次第に病毒が深く侵入して、あるいは目を潰し鼻を陥没させ耳を聞こえなくし声を出なくし、あるいは手足の屈伸ができなくなり、あるいは奇石怪岩のような顔つきとなり、恥を生涯に残し、あるいは命を落とす。私の父母もこの病気にかかって天寿を全うせずに世を去り、私もまたこの病気に苦しむこと数年、種々の薬剤を用いるといえども、かつて少しの効果もなかった。ここにおいて一人の医師のもとを訪れ、詳しく病苦を説明し、このように世に在って長く苦しむよりは速やかに死ぬのもまた

The physician said, "Then you should use Shippōgan from among the calomel preparations to the fullest," and had me take a full seven-day course. By the fourth day my mouth swelled and hurt. Calculating that the remaining three days' worth would be difficult to swallow with the mouth pain, on the morning of the fifth day I took all the remainder at once. From that night my mouth became greatly ulcerated and injured, spitting saliva about two shō daily. This continued for over thirty days. The mouth gradually healed but the disease poison did not decrease at all. The physician said, "The medicine's power is insufficient. You should continue taking Shippōgan," and continued this attack from the eleventh month of the previous year until the sixth month of the following year, but I still saw no effect. At this time my body had wasted away, blood and flesh withered and fell off, leaving only bone and skin.
