　　強震有之手遠之村方は相分兼候得共城下町二而は猶又

　　而申上置候通犀川上手二堤留場所之儀は更級郡之内安庭

四月六日、御用番様へ提出

私の在所である信州松代において、先月二十四日亥の刻頃に大地震が発生したことは、先日すでにご報告申し上げた通りでございます。その後も今なお揺れが収まらず、昼夜を問わず何度となく時々揺れが続いており、同二十九日の朝と晦日の夕方の両日に三度の強い揺れがございました。遠方の村々の状況は把握しかねますが、城下町においては、さらに家屋の倒壊等もあり、近辺の山上より岩石が夥しく崩れ落ちております。また、かねてよりご報告申し上げておりました通り、犀川上流に水がせき止められている場所についてですが、更級郡の内、安庭村・山平村付近にある岩倉と申す高山の両端が崩れ、一か所は三十町ほど、一か所は八十町ほどの間にわたって川の中に押し入り、その辺りの村々が土砂に埋まっているところもございます。しかしながら、岩石が非常に大量であることから、とても水の勢いでは押し切れない様子でございます。そのため次第に水がせき止められ、平常の水面より凡そ七、八丈にも及ぶ程に達しますと、数か村が水中に沈むこととなり、その辺り一帯は湖のような状態となっております。もちろん様々な手当を命じておりますが、大山が崩れ、岩石が押し入っている状況でございますため、人力ではどうにも手が届きかねる状態でございます。また、川中島平の者共は、このせき止めた水がどの方向から一気に押し出してくるかもしれないと計り知れず恐怖しており、山手へ立ち退いております。丹波島においても同様の状況でございますため、人馬の継立もできかねております。さらに精々手当を命じておりますが、まずはこの段をご報告申し上げます。詳細については追ってご報告申し上げます。以上。

Submitted to the Magistrate on the Sixth Day of the Fourth Month

Regarding the great earthquake that struck my domain of Matsushiro in Shinano Province around the Hour of the Boar on the twenty-fourth day of last month, I reported this to you previously. Since then, the tremors have not subsided; the earth continues to shake at intervals day and night. There were three strong tremors on the morning of the twenty-ninth and the evening of the last day of the month. Although conditions in distant villages are difficult to ascertain, within the castle town there have been further instances of collapsed buildings, and enormous quantities of rock have been falling from the surrounding mountains. Furthermore, as previously reported, regarding the location where the Saigawa River has been dammed upstream: near Yasuniwamura and Yamahiramura villages in Sarashina District, a great mountain called Iwakura collapsed at both ends, with debris pushed into the river over a stretch of approximately thirty *chō* in one location and approximately eighty *chō* in another, burying villages in the vicinity. However, given the enormous quantity of rock, it appears impossible for the force of the water alone to break through. Consequently, the water is gradually backing up and may rise to approximately seven or eight *jō* above its normal level, which would submerge several villages, and the surrounding area has already taken on the appearance of a lake. Naturally, we have ordered various countermeasures, but given that a great mountain has collapsed and its rocks have been pushed into the river, human effort alone cannot suffice. Furthermore, the people of the Kawanakajima plain are terrified, unable to predict from which direction the impounded water may suddenly burst forth, and have evacuated to higher ground in the mountains. The situation at Tabashima is similarly dire, making the relay of persons and horses impossible. We continue to order the most strenuous countermeasures possible, but for now I humbly submit this report. Further details will follow. Respectfully submitted.

Regarding the great earthquake that struck my domain of Takada in Echigo Province from around the Hour of the Boar on the twenty-fourth day of last month, I reported this to you on the fourth day of this month. Since then, the tremors have not subsided; the earth continues to shake at intervals day and night. There was a strong tremor around the Hour of the Horse on the twenty-ninth, causing further extensive damage throughout various locations. Reports from my domain state that the number of collapsed and damaged buildings has continued to increase across rice storehouses, temples, shrines, towns, and rural villages alike. Further details will follow, but for now I humbly submit this report. Respectfully submitted.
