現代語訳
を守らない者は偽り者であり、その人の内に真理はない。しかし、その方の言葉を守る人の内には、神の愛が真に全うされている。このことによって、私たちがその方の内にいることを知る。その方の内にとどまっていると言う人は、その方が歩まれたように自分も歩むべきである。
兄弟たちよ、私はあなたたちに新しい戒めを書いているのではない。むしろあなたたちが初めから持っていた古い戒め、初めから聞いた言葉である古い戒めである。私が再び新しい戒めをあなたたちに書く。このことは、その方の内にも、あなたたちの内にも真実である。闇は過ぎ去り、まことの光がすでに輝いている。光の中にいると言う人で、しかしその兄弟を憎む者は、まだ闇の中にいる。兄弟を愛する人は、光の中にとどまる。その人の内につまずきはない。兄弟を憎む人は、闇の中におり、闇の中を歩んでいる。どこに行くのか知らない、闇が目を見えなくしたからである。

does not keep them is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God is truly perfected. By this we know that we are in Him. Whoever says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked.
Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard from the beginning. Again, I am writing you a new commandment, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. Whoever says he is in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
