現代語訳
神を愛する人は、兄弟をも愛するべきです。
イエス・キリストを信じる人は皆、神から生まれた者です。生む方を愛する人は皆、その方から生まれた者をも愛します。私たちが神を愛し、その戒めに従うなら、そのことによって神の子どもたちを愛していることが分かります。神を愛するとは、神の戒めを守ることです。神の戒めは重荷ではありません。神から生まれた者は皆、世に勝つのです。私たちの信仰こそ、世に打ち勝つ勝利です。世に勝つ者とは、イエスが神の子であることを信じる人のほかに、だれがいるでしょうか。
この方は、イエス・キリストです。水と血とによって来られた方です。水だけでなく、水と血との両方によってです。そして証しをなさるのは"霊"です。"霊"は真理だからです。証しをするものが三つあります。天において証しするのは、御父と、知恵ある尊い"霊"様、三位一体の神です。この三つは一つです。

Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome. For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: In heaven the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one.
