実になけかはしき事なり若世上
一般これを信用するにいたらは痘瘡
に死するものは一人もなき事となりぬ

牛痘法は古今無比の良い方法であり、今では辺境の僻地まで広まり、流行性天然痘の大きな災厄を免れ、非業の死を逃れる幼児は数億万人とも計り知れない。まことに仁術と言うべきである。しかしながら今もなお深く疑って信用しない人が少なくない。このような仁術がありながら、年々天然痘が流行するたびに幼児を多く損なうことは、実に嘆かわしいことである。もし世間一般がこれを信用するに至れば、天然痘で死ぬ者は一人もいないことになるであろう。これが私の願望するところである。

The cowpox vaccination method is an incomparably good technique from ancient times to the present. Now it has spread even to remote frontier regions, and countless hundreds of millions of children have escaped the great calamity of epidemic smallpox and avoided untimely death. This can truly be called a benevolent medical art. However, even now there are not a few people who deeply doubt and refuse to trust it. Despite having such a benevolent technique available, it is truly lamentable that many children continue to be harmed each year whenever smallpox epidemics occur. If the general public were to come to trust this method, there would not be a single person who dies from smallpox. This is what I earnestly hope for.
